American Quilt Study Group
The American Quilt Study Group is an organization that was founded in 1980 by Sally Garroutte to promote the study of our heritage in quilts. I am an area representative for AQSG and can provide membership brochures or make a presentation to your guild. If you are interested in a particular topic that you wish to research, AQSG can provide you with a mentor.
Every other year, AQSG conducts a study of a theme in quilt-making. Last year, I participated in a study of red and green quilts of the 19th century. About 40 volunteers each made a wall-sized quilt inspired by an antique quilt of the period. The quilts were displayed at the Annual Seminar and 25 of the quilts were selected to tour. All 40 quilts were featured in McCall magazine. It was great fun to participate.
Research is presented in "Blanket Statements," a quarterly publication, and "Uncoverings" an annual journal. If you are passionate about quilt history, this is a great organization to join. My membership broadens my understanding of quilts in our history and inspires me to look at quilts in a whole new way.

| There is fascinating information available on quilt history, both in published texts and on the internet. See my resources page for some ideas.
Another way that we learn about the history of quilts is through state documentation projects. These projects, largely coordinated by volunteers, have resulted in books--many of which are available through Amazon.com--on the history of quilts in various states.
